Math in CTE Workshop

CTE teachers had the opportunity to attend a math workshop focusing on their curriculum and learn strategies to utilize in their classes. Lesson plans, activities, and ideas to incorporate within their instructional objectives were explored. During this workshop, a strong focus was presented creating problem-solving opportunities for students and new instructional methods to enhance students' numeracy strategies. This follows our STEM focus for professional development in Operation Survival CTP Style.

Davidson County Schools received a $3,000 grant through the Northwest Area Health Education Center and Wake Forest School of Medicine to provide a summer camp on health careers.  This exploratory camp took place June 16-20 with hands-on activities, tours, observations, and some job shadowing opportunities with our area partner Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Thirty-six rising ninth and tenth graders participated in activities such as making skin out of various foods and creating lungs from balloons, and reviewing their functions.  The students toured Davidson County Community College and observed different program areas related to the medical field.  Wake Forest School of Medicine and Lexington Memorial Hospital gave students the opportunity to view different patient procedures and explore different departments.

The participants learned about a variety of health careers and the salary ranges as well as financial aid, scholarships, and colleges.  The students received lab coats, t-shirts, stethoscopes, and certificates for their participation in Camp Med.  Parents were invited on the final day to observe their child's presentation on a chosen health career they had researched during the week.

Tuesday Tours is a program that provides the opportunity for Davidson County School staff to tour a local business or industry after school throughout the year. The tours are set up to develop relationships with business and industry to learn more about their operations, to provide relevance of instruction and real-world situations to students. Collaboration with local business and industry also allows DCS to invite guest speakers into the classroom to discuss careers, set up job shadowing, cooperative education, internships, and apprenticeships.

The goal of our program is to tour a business or industry that is categorized as one of the ten Career Pathways designated by the state of North Carolina. Current tours will include Pepsi Bottling Ventures and John Deere Hitachi. Past tours have included PPG (Industrial Technologies), Thomasville Medical Center (Health Sciences), Childress Vineyards (Agriculture and Natural Resources), Culinary Arts program at the Koury Hospitality Center at GTCC (Public Services), Childress Racing (Transport Systems) and the DCCC campus.
