screenings from the school nurse during the year. This may include
vision checks, heights, and weights or specific health concerns that
may be referred to her by school staff. Your child may also receive a

AHERA (Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act) Notification
As mandated by federal regulations, public schools were to have each of their school buildings inspected for asbestos, and a plan of managing asbestos that was detected was to be filed with the North Carolina Department of Human Resources, Division of Health Services, Raleigh, NC by May 9, 1989. Davidson County Schools complied with this mandate.
The Davidson County Board of County Commissioners hired a certified and accredited firm to conduct inspections of public school buildings. A thorough inspection of all schools has been completed and a written plan for the management of any detected asbestos is in place. Those management plans are on file at each school and the administrative office.
Necessary measures have been taken to repair or remove any damaged asbestos, and the management plans outline the ongoing maintenance program at each location.
It is also required that at least once every six months after a management plan is in effect, each LEA shall conduct periodic surveillance in each building that it owns, record any changes in the condition of the materials, and make those records a part of the management plan. Those requirements have been met by the Davidson County Schools.
It is further required that every three years after a management plan is in effect, each LEA shall conduct a thorough reinspection of every building for the presence of asbestos. Those requirements have also been met by the Davidson County Schools.

from the Davidson County Health Department - April 12, 2005 Memo
L. Layton Long, R.S., M.S.A.
Health Director
The summer season is here
and with the warm weather many people will be visiting petting zoos,
fairs, farm exhibits, and getting new pets. Unfortunately, there is a
chance of becoming ill with exposure to animals and many of these will
be children. Below are a few tips from the CDC to protect yourself and
children.
Tips to protect children from getting sick while petting or handling animals:
• Children younger than 5 years old should be supervised while handling animals.
•
Children should not be allowed to kiss pets or to put their hands or
objects into their mouths after handling animals (this includes
pacifiers).
• Children's hands should be washed thoroughly
with running water and soap after contact with animals, their bedding
materials, and feces.
• Hand washing prior to breast feeding or preparation of formula is strongly recommended.
If you are visiting an animal exhibit:
• Find out where hand washing stations are located.
• Always wash your hands after petting animals or touching animal enclosures, especially before eating and drinking.
• Running water and soap are best. Use hand sanitizing gels if running water and soap are not available.
• Keep food and drinks our of animal areas.
• Do not share your food with animals.
• Do not eat or drink raw (unpasteurized) dairy products, including cheese.
• Supervise all hand washing of children.
While young children are at high risk, other groups need to be extra cautious. These groups are listed below:
• Elderly
• Pregnant women
• People undergoing treatments for cancer
• People who have received organ transplants
• People with HIV/AIDS

New Immunization Required |
 |
 |
 |
 |
A new immunization is now required for 6th grade entry,
beginning with the 2008-09 school year.
The new rule states that a booster dose of Tdap vaccine is required for all children before entering 6th grade that are enrolled in public school, or by age 12 for those not attending public schools (i.e., private, religious, home schools) on or after August 1, 2008, if 5 years or more have passed since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine.
Tdap is a combination vaccine that provides protection against three diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (commonly called whooping cough). Please contact your health care provider or local health department to schedule an appointment to receive this vaccine. There is no cost for the Tdap vaccine, although your health care provider may charge a small administration fee to give the vaccine.
Your child will need to bring proof of vaccination to the school on the first day of 6th grade. Acceptable proof of vaccination is a copy of the child's Certificate of Immunization. You will have 30 days from the first day of attendance to present the required up-to-date immunization record for your child. If proof of vaccination is not provided by the end of the 30 calendar day period the child will be suspended from school until he/she provides proof of immunization.
Do not delay! Make sure your child is ready and up-to-date on his/her immunization prior to the start of the 6th grade school year.
