When Kate Bivens passed away in December 2009, the South Davidson community lost a great woman. Kate Floyd Bivens was one of those special people: one who is dedicated over and beyond the call of duty. She was one of those people that was always doing for others, especially when it came to her hometown sports teams. Kate was a big supporter of Denton High School athletics until Denton High School became South Davidson High School. Her allegiance transferred to South Davidson and she could always be counted on to help out. Her children had graduated in the late 70's and early 80's, yet Kate was always there, helping to raise money for the teams, attending almost all of the games, and rooting on yet another generation of athletes. Even after she became sick, she still managed to attend several of the games in the fall of 2009.
After her passing, the Athletic Boosters mourned her loss like many in the community. It was out of that loss that the idea for an award in her memory to be established. Aptly named "The Kate", this award seeks to honor her memory by singling out others who have the qualities that Kate possessed. Specifically, the criteria for this award are as follows:
·
Must have been involved as a longtime supporter of SD Wildcats
·
Can be male or female
·
Is involved in their support BEYOND family ties
·
Is of moral, upstanding character
·
May be a "behind the scenes" worker, often going unnoticed by the general population
Since the boosters club acknowledges that people like Kate may be few and far between, they have decided to give this award every two years, unless deemed appropriate on the off year. Nominations for this prestigious award will be made by the public. Nomination forms will be available online at the South Davidson website, in this local paper, or can be picked up at the school. These nominations will be submitted to the nominating committee, with this committee taking the nominations to the boosters club for an official vote. The award will be presented at the annual Athletic Banquet, which is scheduled this year for May 24. The initial presentation will be made by Kate's surviving children: Mark and Lane. Subsequent awards will be presented by the previous recipient, if possible.
