Summative and Formative Assessments

"Summative assessments are seen as a way to measure, at a particular point in time, student learning as it relates to content standards. Though the information gleaned from this type of assessment can be important, it's too late in the learning process to make adjustments to our teaching.

But formative assessments are different. They allow us to make adjustments in our work with children as they are learning.

 Formative ways of assessing where children are in the learning process include recording what we notice by:

  • Conferring
  • Listening in
  • Observing
  • Examining work samples
  • Charting student thinking on anchor charts
  • Allowing our students to confer and reflect with one another."

 Anchor charts can track student thinking and understanding in all content areas.

 

A Reading Profile, from Snapshots, by Linda Hoyt (Heinemann):

This is used to track a student's use of cueing systems and reading behaviors while reading a variety of text.

Anecdotal notes allow teachers to track and record student progress in all subjects while "on the run."
