2012 Summer Reading Sendoff
The students of South Davidson Middle were given a real treat to encourage reading over the summer. Students visited the media center where they viewed and discussed the Academy Award winning short film, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore with Mrs. Allen, the media specialist. At the conclusion of the discussion, each students was allowed to select a book from the summer reading display for their own, encouraging them to read over the summer. A brochure with suggested reading lists and sources of free audiobooks was also given to each student. The brochure is available in the Document Manager.
Summer reading is one way to cambat the "summer slump" where students lose literacy skills through lack of practice. Continued reading and writing throughout the summer will help keep these skills sharp. Self-selected book ownership encourages and strenghtens literacy skills.
The Summer Reading Sendoff was sponsored by the South Davidson Middle PTO and the South Davidson Media Center with the support and encouragement of the South Davidson Middle administration.
