On June 2, 2010, the NC State Board of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards which will be implemented during the 2012-2013 school year. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) represent K-12 learning expectations in English-Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics.  The Standards reflect the knowledge and skills students need to be college and career ready by the end of high school.

As communication, commerce, and technology continue to advance at a rapid rate, so too do the skills necessary to be competitive in the global workforce.  In order to keep pace, America's children must be prepared no matter where they live or where they go to school.  In the past, academic standards have been different from state to state, leaving some of our students at a competitive disadvantage.

This site is designed to help our communities understand the changes underway to help students grow and prosper in the 21st Century as productive and successful citizens, just as other students across our great nation.  The Common Core Essential Standards initiative is designed to help students transition toward college and career readiness along side of peers throughout North Carolina as well as across the United States.

North Carolina has also adopted Essential Standards in other content areas.
Davidson County Schools are helping teachers transition to the new Common Core State Standards and NC Essential Standards.
