OPENGATE Weapon Detection System

March 18th, 2026

The safety of our students and staff remains a top priority. In the coming weeks, Davidson County Schools will begin implementing the OpenGate weapons detection system at our middle and high schools across the district. This system allows us to screen for prohibited items as students and visitors enter our facilities while maintaining a safe and efficient arrival process.

The video below provides an example of how the OpenGate system works and what students and visitors can expect. Students will be expected to remove the following items from their backpack and hand them to a staff member before screening: chromebooks, 3-ring binders, umbrellas, metal lunch boxes, metal glasses and pencil cases.

We will begin a pilot implementation at Oak Grove High School on Monday, March 23, and will expand to additional schools throughout the remainder of this school year. As each school prepares to implement the system, the school principal will communicate details directly with their school community.

We appreciate your patience and support as we work to implement this additional safety measure as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
