North Carolina Family Guide to Student Assessments

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has created a helpful Family Guide to Student Assessments to explain the various tests students may take during the school year.

This guide is designed to help families understand:

  • What assessments are given in North Carolina public schools.

  • Why assessments are important and how they support student learning.

  • The difference between state-required assessments (like End-of-Grade or End-of-Course tests) and optional or local assessments.

  • How results are used to guide instruction, support students, and evaluate school performance.

The Family Guide includes information by grade level and subject area, so you can easily see what assessments apply to your child.
